Have you backed up your computer?

In the last week we have had to break the news to one customer that we could not recover the data on her MacBook Air. The result was that she needed to take it to a specialist data recovery centre for them to try and recover data from her computer.  We also spent several hours cloning a faulty hard drive for an other customer before the drive could be replaced under its warranty. The most annoying thing about both these cases is that they could have very easily been avoided if these customers had a backup.

Both these computers were Macs so backing up is simple.  All you need to do is plug in an external Hard disk drive and let the Mac take care of things using OSX or MacOs’s TimeMachine Backup.  TimeMachine will check every hour for what files have been modified or created and make a backup. You just need to make sure that the external drive is plugged.

If you are a Windows user, there are also many products out there that will back up your system in much the same way.  One such product is Genie Timeline Home 2017 this will perform very similarly to Apple’s TimeMachine.

Cloud storage is also a great way to make sure your files are backed up and also a great way to have access to your files across all your devices. A product like DropBox will let you store all your important files and photos in your DropBox folder. The files will then sync automatically  and you will be able to access then on all your devises.  Cloud storage is great as it dose not rely on you remembering to plugin an external drive.  All you need is an internet connection in order for your files to sync.

These solutions offered here are all very cost effective options when it comes to the  peace of mind of knowing your data a files are safe. You can buy an external Hard drive for less than $100 and a DropBox Plus account is around the $144 yearly.

Feel free to contact us if you would like to discuss your backup, we are happy to help you come up with the best backup solution to suite your needs.
