Slow iMac- Let us help speed it up for you

Time and time again customers have complained about their 21.5 inch iMacs slow boot times, constant cursors turning to the spinning beachball and  tendencies to just take a long time to preform simple tasks.

Since 2012 Apple have been using a 1TB 5400 rpm hard drive as the standard drive for their 21.5 inch iMacs.  These drives are a stable work horse but unfortunately their read and write times can be very lacking (average  of 100MB/second).

Redbot Computers can swap out the original Hard drive in the iMac with a 1TB SSD (Solid State Drive).  The SSD is newer technology and has much faster read and write speed (up to 500MB/second for the one we use). We have found that that start up times for machine have sped up to less than 30 seconds from start up chime to login screen on most iMacs.

Offer: 1TB SSD upgrade for your 21.5inch iMac  from $365

What you get

  1. We will pick up and deliver the computer back to you in the Port Macquarie area.
  2. We will replace your current hard drive with a 1TB SSD.
  3. We will clone your current data from you hard disk drive to your new SSD.
  4. We will preform a scan, cleanup and optimisation on the SSD once installed and cloned across.

Call us on 0414 607 125 or email contact@redbot.com.au to order your SSD upgrade.  We can also discuss possible operating system and software up-updates for your iMac.

Computer Check Up

A computer is just like any other thing that you own and if you don’t treat it right and service it regularly, it can become sluggish and not perform as it should.

Website under construction

I thought the “Website under construction”  days were something that had been left back in the 90’s and early 2000’s but recently I have come across quite a few websites with links that lead me to some cute image telling me that the page is under construction and to check back soon.

Check back soon…. when should I check? 10 minutes… a day… a week… a month…. ever.

Until a page is ready for viewing by the general public it is best to leave it off your menus, this will make it less likely to be seen by people who are browsing  your website.

Rather than have an “Under Construction” page your business is better off to just add some content telling your viewer about what the page should be about. This shows that that page has some importance to your business. Instead of having a “check back soon notice” on you page, a “call for more information” notice is more appropriate.

If you would like any help with your website and getting it out of the “Under Construction” or ‘ Check back soon”  stage, contact with us and we will help you with your current site or help get you a new website.

Have you backed up your computer?

In the last week we have had to break the news to one customer that we could not recover the data on her MacBook Air. The result was that she needed to take it to a specialist data recovery centre for them to try and recover data from her computer.  We also spent several hours cloning a faulty hard drive for an other customer before the drive could be replaced under its warranty. The most annoying thing about both these cases is that they could have very easily been avoided if these customers had a backup.

Both these computers were Macs so backing up is simple.  All you need to do is plug in an external Hard disk drive and let the Mac take care of things using OSX or MacOs’s TimeMachine Backup.  TimeMachine will check every hour for what files have been modified or created and make a backup. You just need to make sure that the external drive is plugged.

If you are a Windows user, there are also many products out there that will back up your system in much the same way.  One such product is Genie Timeline Home 2017 this will perform very similarly to Apple’s TimeMachine.

Cloud storage is also a great way to make sure your files are backed up and also a great way to have access to your files across all your devices. A product like DropBox will let you store all your important files and photos in your DropBox folder. The files will then sync automatically  and you will be able to access then on all your devises.  Cloud storage is great as it dose not rely on you remembering to plugin an external drive.  All you need is an internet connection in order for your files to sync.

These solutions offered here are all very cost effective options when it comes to the  peace of mind of knowing your data a files are safe. You can buy an external Hard drive for less than $100 and a DropBox Plus account is around the $144 yearly.

Feel free to contact us if you would like to discuss your backup, we are happy to help you come up with the best backup solution to suite your needs.

Speed up your computer with a Solid State Drive (SSD)

Could your Mac or windows computer be faster?

If so you might benefit from a Solid State drive.  You may have heard that these drives can be quite costly  and have though that they were an unaffordable gimmick.  But the benefits are clear and the price tag may surprise you.

  • Fast Boot-Up – SSDs know that «go» means «go». Just turn it on and it won’t be long before you can begin working.
  • Zip through File Searches – Remember the last time you attempted a simple e-mail search using a Hard Disk Drive (HDD)?
  • Fast File Transfer Time – Transfer and copy files fast-just enough time to give you a head start on rush-hour traffic.
  • Start Applications Fast – Need to make a quick ten-second edit before meeting with a client? SSDs help to load programmes such as Adobe Photoshop and PowerPoint.
  •  Minimal Downtime – Routine maintenance tasks shouldn’t disrupt your work flow. SSDs help to minimise simple tasks like virus scans.
  • Master Multitasking – SSDs smoothly handle multiple programmes so you can crop photos and load game maps fast.

Redbot computers have a Solid state drive deal that may really help you:

What does your email address say about your business?

You never get a second chance to make a first impression

It’s amazing how strong and quickly people are forming opinions about you and your business just by the email address on your business card.

For most small business owners, creating an email address specifically for their new business is one of the first steps they take. Since most businesses start out with a limited budget, trying to save money is important. Creating a Gmail, Yahoo, or Hotmail account is easy, and usually free.  An other option people take is to use their ISP to set up their new business email address, This is still a no no as you still end up with a @bigpond or @iinet email address.

Why promote the service provider when you should be promoting your business?

Redbot can help.  Give us a call on 02 6582 7582  and we can discuss the best and most cost efficient service for you.  We provide any solutions from a $2 a month simple email account package though to providing an Microsoft Office 365 solution with hosted exchange accounts.
